Purpose. The Pm-149 isotope can be used for palliative therapy of bone metastases, as well as a pharmaceutical for radiotherapy procedures in the form of radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies, “receptor-biomolecules”, or bifunctional chelates.
Specifications. The average energy of β-particles and the half-life of Pm-149 are 409 keV and 53 hours, respectively. The properties of Pm-149 almost coincide with the widely used isotopes Sm-153 and Lu-177. For the production of Pm-149, the nuclear reaction 150Nd(γ,n) 149Nd (T1/2=1.73 h) → 149Pm is used
Application area. Medicine.
Advantages. The most important advantage of Pm-149 against Sm-153 and Lu-177 is its high specific activity, which helps to expand the area of its use due to a decrease in radiation load and a decrease in the degree of hematopoiesis suppression.
