On April 12, 2024, as part of the global initiative “GeoNight” of the International Geographical Union, the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine will hold a scientific online forum “Functional areas in Ukraine: Vision for the future”.
Assessing territories and determining their functions is a typical task of geographical research in Ukraine. At the state level, the main document reflecting the relevant results is the General Planning Scheme for the Territory of Ukraine, which, however, requires updating. One of the decisive factors requiring this renewal is the consequences of Russian aggression. They radically changed the state and status of most Ukrainian territories, logistics schemes, specialization of many regions, and led to an increase in risks, as well as significant losses of biodiversity. At the same time, it is advisable to further improve approaches to the identification of functional territories and their harmonization in the context of the developments of the ESPON program (this is a pan-European program aimed at supporting the policies of countries and regions in various sectors based on data and knowledge about the territory).
The purpose of the online forum “Functional areas in Ukraine: vision for the future” is to review, from the perspective of geographical science, approaches to the definition and use of functional territories of Ukraine in the context of the war with Russia and changes in geostrategic vectors. In the future, such an expert platform will be useful for updating spatial planning documents.
The event program includes two reports by key speakers:
1. “Vision of functionality in the updated General Scheme of Territory Planning of Ukraine” (speaker – Deputy Director for Scientific Work of the State Enterprise “Ukrainian State Research Institute of Urban Design “DIPROMISTO” named after Yu.M. Bilokon” Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Yuriy Palekha).
2. “Metropolitan regions of Ukraine as basic multifunctional components of its planning structure” (speaker – head of the sector of territorial organization of society of the department of socio-geographical research of the Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Grigory Pidgrushny).
