NWO Grants: An Opportunity to Make New Professional Networks

In the summer of 2023, the National Research Foundation of Ukraine and the Netherlands Research Council (NWO) agreed to join forces and announced a competitive selection for additional grant opportunities of the Netherlands Research Council (NWO) for Ukrainian scientists. So what is this competition and who can apply?

The competition is called “NWO-NFGU Partnership Initiative 2023”, its budget is 250 thousand euros. The maximum amount of one grant is 25 thousand euros. Grants will be provided to winners until the initiative’s budget is exhausted.

As part of the initiative, Ukrainian scientists can work remotely together with scientists from the Kingdom of the Netherlands and thus continue their scientific career even during war.

The NWO project team is ready to provide advice, information, mentoring and other assistance to researchers from Ukraine.

Who can apply

Applications for grants can be submitted by Ukrainians who are managers of ongoing NWO-funded research projects.

The main applicant in the project is a scientist from the Kingdom of the Netherlands; a Ukrainian scientist can be a co-applicant.

Requirements for Ukrainian scientists wishing to submit applications: be in Ukraine; have a scientific degree; have official employment and work in a Western Military District or in a state-owned scientific institution (as a professor, associate professor, chief/leading/senior researcher). And also not to work in a scientific institution that is subject to international and national sanctions laws and regulations (see EU sanctions map www.sanctionsmap.eu).

What needs will be financed?

The grant covers the wages of one Ukrainian scientist, part-time or full-time, for a period of 6 to 24 months and material costs. Material costs include: costs for the purchase of goods/services necessary to complete the project; travel expenses, as well as expenses for organizational events.

The maximum cost for one partner from Ukraine (full-time equivalent) is 1040 euros per month (this includes both wages and material costs).

Ukrainian institutions where applicants work can receive only one grant under this competition.

Submission deadlines

Applications can be submitted at any time starting September 11, 2023. The deadline for submission is April 8, 2024.

Grants will be awarded until the initiative’s budget is exhausted in chronological order of application.

Each application must contain an application form completed and signed by the main Dutch applicant and the Ukrainian scientist; a brief description of the contribution of the Ukrainian scientist; resume of a Ukrainian scientist and other documents (the full list can be found here: download).
