Information technology for automating waste management in the city

Purpose. To ensure automation and optimization of the process of managing the accounting, collection, transportation of waste (to recycling points) in the city, to increase the efficiency of the activities of municipal enterprises in collecting and sorting waste and reducing material and time costs for these operations.

Specifications. The full composition of the fullness sensor consists of modules: microcontroller, ultrasonic sensor, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules. The developed software has a client-server architecture. In particular, users can use information remotely, while receiving only the information that belongs to them. The software consists of a data processing server (a Web API designed according to MVC (Model-View-Controller) principles), a database in the form of cloud storage, and a website implemented using the React library.

Application area. Communal services of settlements, management and economics of municipal services. Ukraine, public utilities organizations, Ministry of Economy, Environment and Finance

Advantages. The uniqueness of the technology lies in the fact that for the first time a systematic approach to the problem of waste disposal at the city level is proposed at each stage and the management of all recycling processes using a unified information and software system (IPS), which allows you to automate and optimize waste management. One of the main disadvantages of most such systems is the economic unprofitability of their implementation, the need for significant investments and restructuring of the city’s infrastructure. In contrast, the technology uses IPS, which is easily installed in the current state of affairs in Ukraine, using existing utility equipment. In addition, it is possible to statistically record collected waste. A website with statistical data will be available to every citizen of the city who is registered in this system. Information such as the number of utilities and information on them, the average speed of the route, the amount of fuel consumed, etc. will be shown here.

Technical and economic effect. The developed system for collecting and transporting waste reduces fuel consumption due to the fact that the software includes the ability to find the fastest path if the starting point is a utility service and the final point is a sorting station, taking into account road congestion, saving fuel and collecting waste only from filled containers, as well as the ability to dynamically change the route of a specific garbage truck when a container suddenly becomes full. Features that reduce additional costs: the ability to connect the software to a common service provision and management service. For example, to the currently existing system of the “smart” city of Kyiv Kyiv Smart City; fullness sensors are attached to existing garbage containers; The software is tailored to companies or individual branches, rather than the other way around, without forcing utility companies to exit the market or close branches.

Description. Container fullness sensors send information at a certain frequency to the server, where a route is built based on data for calculating distances and container fullness. At a certain time, the utility service receives a route request from the system’s online service. Dynamically changing the route of a garbage truck allows you to collect garbage from containers, even if the signal about their filling was received after the start of the route. Statistical data is collected daily along the routes of the region, which are taken as the basis for calculating data for the city, and then the country. All of them are stored separately from the route data in the database for further easier construction of graphs and visualization on the site, without going through the database again. The part of the software with which the user directly interacts is a control center and viewing of statistical information, including information about existing utility companies throughout the country or individual regions of the city. This section is available to all city residents.
