PURPOSE:
The Ukrainian University has developed a method for suppressing dust formation and fixing the surface of the red mud sludge storage facility, which is designed to fix the slopes and beaches of the sludge storage facility using biological materials – turf blocks and reed mats.
DESCRIPTION:
The proposed method for suppressing dust formation and fixing the surface of a sludge storage facility for red mud, including irrigation of the surface of the sludge storage facility with an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid. Thereafter, the treated surface is sodded with a previously prepared layer of grass-based sod, including components from the family of cereals, birch, etc. The method also further provides for the use of reed mats. The proposed method for dealing with dust was applied at the sludge storage of an alumina refinery. Field and laboratory studies have shown sufficient resistance of the proposed materials to the action of harmful factors (pH 10-11) and meteorological conditions (t from -20 to + 40 ° C, snow, rain, wind), that is, they have shown the suitability and effectiveness of fixing the surface of the sludge storage. Recommended field of application: storage and disposal of metallurgical industry waste in open sludge storage facilities, as well as in concentration plants, metallurgical, chemical and ore processing plants.
ADVANTAGES:
The implementation of the distinctive features of the invention provides the achievement of advantages that cannot be achieved when implementing the method of the closest analogue, namely: the claimed method provides for the use of biological systems to suppress the formation of dust, environmentally friendly; in addition, the inventive method is effective, which is confirmed by the values of the coefficient of wind-induced dust rise; the proposed method provides the possibility of using the products of the sludge storage, if necessary, without destroying the protective layer.
TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC EFFECT:
The low cost of biological material, its transportation, long-term protective action makes the proposed method economically attractive.

Enterprises interested in the preservation and disposal of metallurgical waste in open sludge storages, as well as at enrichment plants, metallurgical, chemical and ore processing enterprises (uranium, mining plants, alumina refinery, waste storage of thermal power plants, state district power plants, nuclear power plants, ports).
RESULTS OF THE RESEARCH:
This method is environmentally friendly and economically attractive.
