The development can be used to stop bleeding from vessels of different diameters both in case of injuries in wartime or in emergency situations, and during planned surgical interventions.
The essence of the development is the formation of a multilayer gauze bandage, which contains an active substance – chitosan. It is used in the form of a gel with an active ingredient concentration of 0.5% to 5% and a molecular weight of 100 to 900 kDa. A multilayer dressing is formed with a thickness of 0.5 to 5 cm by applying chitosan gel to a base, in particular gauze, cellulose, collagen, followed by drying, or using a sol-gel method stimulated by freezing (freeze-gelation). After adding pressure to the multilayer dressing while pressing it against the wound for at least five minutes, fix it by tightly bandaging it, or continue pressing the multi-layer dressing until the bleeding stops completely. The inclusion of chitosan in various ratios and forms makes it possible to significantly increase the effectiveness of stopping arterial bleeding from large vessels (femoral and brachial arteries) in comparison with traditional medical devices registered in Ukraine. The additionally developed method has an antibacterial effect, which makes it possible to reduce the frequency of purulent infectious complications.
The use of a chitosan bandage can reduce the time to stop massive bleeding by 2 times. The volume of blood loss when using a lyophilized sponge decreases 2.9 times, dressings with chitosan – 10 times. Other advantages: ease of production, low cost of components, ease of use, no analogues in Ukraine.
