Call for applications for the Virtual Institute for Advanced Study in Ukraine

In close collaboration with partner institutions from Ukraine, Europe and the US, the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin (Wissenschaftskolleg) has launched an initiative to support Ukrainian scientists in their efforts to establish an Institute for Advanced Study in Kyiv. Full-scale institutional activity in Ukraine will become possible only after the end of the war, but already in September 2023, the Virtual Ukrainian Institute for Advanced Study (VUIAS) will begin its activities and accept the first interdisciplinary group of fellows. VUIAS will provide fellowships to Ukrainian scientists, coordinate them to form a virtual community, organize colloquia and other virtual and hybrid events for them, establish links with relevant colleagues and academic institutions at the international level, and provide services such as access to a library in translation and publication of works. Ukraine’s four most active universities and research institutions provide a strong institutional partnership for VUIAS and ensure that it is firmly anchored in the national and regional academic context. VUIAS is funded by the German Volkswagen Foundation.

The first group in the 2023/2024 academic year will consist of approximately fourteen fellows. VUIAS provides two types of scholarships:

  • VUIAS Scholarships in Ukraine provided by the Wissenschaftskolleg Institute to researchers working at universities and research institutes in Ukraine and residing in Ukraine;
  • VUIAS Scholarships for Funded, Selected and Hosted Scholars Abroad by Eight Leading Global Institutes for Advanced Study located in Europe and the USA.

This is the call for applications for six VUIAS Scholarships in Ukraine for the 2023/2024 academic year. VUIAS Scholarships in Ukraine will be provided to scientists living in Ukraine and working at Ukrainian universities and research institutes for ten months (from September 2023 to June 2024). Fellows will stay at their institutions and receive scholarships abroad. The amount of VUIAS scholarships in Ukraine is 500 euros per month for post-doctors and 1000 euros per month for professors.

We encourage Ukrainian scientists to apply for VUIAS Ukraine Scholarships in all academic disciplines – applications in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences are equally welcome. VUIAS scholarships in Ukraine support scientists in the implementation of a self-selected research project. The fellowship is open to scholars at all stages of their careers as long as they have a Ph.D. and have not yet retired.

VUIAS Ukraine Scholarships are for scientists residing in Ukraine, holding Ukrainian citizenship or a long-term residence permit, and working in a Ukrainian academic institution. During the 2023/2024 academic year, all VUIAS Fellows will be required to engage in interdisciplinary exchange with the community through regular participation in the VUIAS Colloquium and other events. The working languages will be Ukrainian and English; both active and passive English proficiency is expected.
